ON BURNING BIBLES:

"When they burned the New Testament they pretended a zeal very fervent to maintain only God’s honor, which they said with protestation, was obscured by translation in English, causing much error. But the truth plainly to be said, this was the cause why they were afraid, least laymen should know their iniquity."

Jesus of Nazareth - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) Jesus of Nazareth

An incredibly powerful portrayal of Jesus: this Jesus is both kind and loving and yet never loses the sense of who he really is or that in his hands is firmly committed the judgment of all things. Please bear in mind, however, that this rendition is not always doctrinally perfect, nor does it really go so far as to clearly present the Gospel at any point. One can glean a wonderful sense of the reality of the man Jesus, who, though walking among men, was yet he who was sent from God and did descend from heaven to effect the salvation of man. But for the Gospel in its real context, refer to the writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - for, by the time you have read these, you will know that word of power that is able to save ("receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves," Jam 1:21-23 KJV). And for portraits as this - "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1 Thes 5:21 KJV).

The Bible - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) The Bible - In the Beginning

Richly entertaining & perfect for the whole family! This delightful movie covers from the beginning when God created the world, all its creatures and Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, to the trial of Abraham in sacrificing his only son Isaac. The movie also includes Cain's murder of righteous Abel, the Tower of Babel when God confused the languages of the people, and more.

Joseph - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) Joseph

The role of Pontifar is embellished far beyond the Biblical account; he almost appears as a larger figure than Joseph himself, obscuring the biblical Joseph and rendering the historical account somewhat confused and weak. What must be remembered is that Joseph was not a boy thrust into a strange place and position for which he is ill equipped and utterly unprepared; Joseph was a man and a prophet to whom God not only revealed the coming famine but prepared his person and character through persecutions and through trials and bondages and hardships, fitting him, not only for the position of power in which he would place him, but with a strength of character and sheer genius of mind to not only devise a solution but to manage the crisis of the famine itself. Joseph became the very instrument of survival for the country of Egypt and for his own nation for the duration of the famine. And thus, the dream of the sheaves, in which Joseph's brothers bow to him, is fulfilled, and is not, as his brothers had first imagined, a dream of unmerited personal pride, but is, foremost, a great trial of faith and humbling for all involved, for Joseph first and for him as among the men who were the progenitors of the twelve tribes of Israel. By such does God show men that they are dependent upon him for good so that they cannot but walk in faith, humbly before him, looking to him in fear, prepared to glorify God in good and bad. One might note that there are many 'Josephs' in the world: God-fearing men and women, who, by trial and hardship, gain humility, strength of character, wisdom and grace, by which, in time of crisis, they are distinguished in faith and godliness before men.

God's Outlaw - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) God's Outlaw - The Story of William Tyndale

Documentary-styled drama about William Tyndale (1494-1536ad), an English Reformer (known as 'the Apostle of England in the time of the Reformation'). Almost singlehandedly, Tyndale translated, printed and secretly distributed the New Testament in English, thereby making it possible for the common people to read the life-giving Word of God. Having done exactly that which the Roman Church, through Bishop Tonstal of London, had specifically denied him to do, which also all men were, under the law or canon of the Church Catholic to do, he immediately became the focus of a campaign to find and stop him. He continued his work until he was deceived by a spy sent by Tonstal to find him and deliver him to the 'authorities,' whereupon he was immediately imprisoned and then martyred by strangulation and burning. One may say: a refreshing film except that a man - a real man who lived and walked upon this earth, died for translating the Scriptures; but through such men as this, God himself chose to make us free of 'authority' that we may have and possess, buy and sell, translate and publish, comment upon and, God help all men, never again be subject to those who would bind and rule the consciences of others or who believe that they may use any means to stop the free preaching of God's word.

John Wycliffe - The Morning Star - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) John Wycliffe - The Morning Star

Documentary-styled drama about the life of John Wycliffe (1324-1384ad), an English Reformer who defended and preached the authority of Scripture alone. In so doing, he challenged Papal authority, pointed a finger at the amassed wealth of the Church and clergy, denied the right of the Church to define doctrine after its own mind, overturned the un-Scriptural doctrines of the Church openly - doctrines such as transubstantiation, and gained the ill-will of his fellow priests and clergy. In an effort to educate the people Wycliffe translated the Bible from the old Latin versions into an English that could commonly be read and understood, and he sent out traveling preachers, who came to be known as 'Lollards,' to make the Word of God known to the common people from whom it had been withheld. The story is highly recommended for a better understanding of the course of events that lead two centuries later to Protestant Reformation.

Elizabeth R - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) Elizabeth R

An Emmy Award winning historical docu-drama by the BBC Masterpiece Theatre detailing the reign of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth's reign ushered in freedom of conscience in England and created a safe haven for the intensely persecuted Gospel Christians and Protestants. While openly refusing to give way to any counter-action or retaliation over the past, Elizabeth ensured that the people heard the truth, were reminded of the past and turned not again in fond memory of it. Among her amazing moments - she acknowledges and glorifies God for the role he alone appointed her to and his providential work in bringing her to the throne; she has Bibles placed in every church for the use of the people, and she reigned to her old age despite the many plots to re-establish the 'old religion'. This film traces the various plots, intrigues and attempts to overturn the mighty changes that occurred under her rule and portrays the character of Elizabeth with great accuracy.

Sorceress - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) Sorceress

The intriguing story of a 13th Century Dominican Inquisitor, Friar Etienne de Bourbon. Etienne journeys to a small French village, upon his papal commission, where he is to root out heretics - which place becomes a turning point in his ecclesiastical career. In the village he discovers a mysterious and wise 'forest woman' named Elda who prepares and administers herbal remedies, and who shows herself well-versed in the art of human relations whereby she administers a health in mind and body that is above common. Eventually, finding some fault in Elda's practices, Etienne orders the secular ruler to burn her. It is only by an interesting twist of events that Etienne's past is revealed to him, the revelation of which, under current circumstances, forces him to learn compassion and to relent, even retreat by way of a courageous daring, from his present course. A rare glimpse into the sad ignorance and superstition of the Dark Ages. The story is based on Etienne's own historical treatise.

Witches Hammer (Kladivo na carodejnice). Witches' Hammer (Kladivo na carodejnice)

An elderly woman attempts to steal a consecrated Host during Communion for a local midwife, but is exposed by an altar boy. At the instigation of the zealous local priest, the women are accused of witchraft and the Inquisition is summoned into action. The Inquisition works its way up to the wealthiest villagers by forcing its victims to name fellow villagers who are also 'guilty' of witchcraft. Queen Margot - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) Queen Margot (La Reine Margot)

A vivid portrayal of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre that occurred in Paris (1572) and spread to the provinces in the following months. The film begins with the marriage of Catholic Princess Margot to Protestant Prince Henry of Navarre. The marriage, arranged by Catherine de Medici, Queen Mother, and King Charles I of France drew thousands of Huguenot Protestants to Paris for the celebrations. The massacre begins with a carefully crafted assassination attempt on the Huguenot Admiral Coligny and is followed quickly by the open slaughter of Protestant men, woman and children in the night by the King's soldiers. Although the movie depicts the event as somewhat hap-hazard, historical record reveals a pre-meditation followed by celebration, even in Rome, where a papal medal struck and a jubilee held. The film provides a good overview of the happenings and key players in the events and the sad underlying cause of the massacre. It should be noted that the movie is very graphic and honest about the people, the culture, and the event, and has therefore been rated R.

In French with English Subtitles.

A Lamp in the Dark (The Untold History of the Bible). A Lamp in the Dark: The Untold History of the Bible

A Lamp in the Dark is an exciting documentary that shows the intriguing history of the Bible. Enter into a world of saints and martyrs battling against spies, assassins, and wolves in sheep's clothing. Through the Middle Ages, the popes and Inquisition forbade biblical translation, threatening imprisonment and death to those who disobeyed. Learn the lives of men like John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, William Tyndale, Myles Coverdale and others, who hazarded their lives to communicate the Bible in languages people could understand. With the Fall of Constantinople, ancient Greek manuscripts came into Europe, and with them, the clear streams of understanding that would bring about the Protestant Reformation. But what is little known is that Rome launched a Counter Reformation with the intent of destroying all the works of the Reformers. Could this be the key to the "untold" history of the Bible? And is it possible that this ancient war on the Word of God continues to this day?

The Spreading Flame (1000 years of Church History) - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) The Spreading Flame - 1000 years of Church History (Part I)

A documentary that provides an overview of the ancient faith of the 'Waldenses,' the Huguenots of France, the Bible translator and martyr William Tyndale of England, the French Reformer John Calvin, and more.

The Indestructible Book (The Story of The Bible) - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) The Indestructible Book - the Story of the Bible

An informative and very professional documentary. It does, however, fall short in relating the history of the people known as Waldenses, who, historically, not only maintained the scripture from Apostolic times but risked their lives for the preaching of the Gospel, endured grievous persecutions and even crusades against them for their Gospel beliefs.

   MOVIES:   EXPOSÉ MOVIES

The following exposé films seek to educate the modern public of certain longstanding and undeniable fruits of the Catholic Church's system - of celibacy and of dogma. Is 'exposé' an acceptable Gospel principle? "Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them." Ephesians 5:11.

The Magdalene Sisters - Buy on Amazon.com! (expose movies) The Magdalene Sisters

The true story of a group of young Irish women who are forced into a laundry facility run by Catholic nuns; only to suffer for and work off their 'sins.' What sins were they incarcerated and made to "pay" for? - having a child before marriage, being raped by a drunken cousin, and being a little too flirtatious. The girls are treated as slaves and they labor under the system that would show them the justice of their degradation.

Our Fathers - Buy on Amazon.com! (bible christian movies) Our Fathers

The true story of the headline news regarding the state of the Catholic priests in the Boston Archdiocese. Given the subject matter, this movie very modestly portrays the true stories of the victims and attempts to show the reasons or the reasoning - human and dogmatic - why and how men believed to be holy Fathers and priests went unpunished and continued to be thought 'holy.'

The Martyrdom

by Henry Fliedner

The Martyrdom of a People or The Vaudois of Piedmont and their History by Henry Fliedner

“The Light Shines in Darkness."

A Christian History and Martyrology:

Henry Fliedner's work offers a concise history of those known as the Vaudois or Waldensians—Christians of the pre-Reformation era. Fliedner traces their Bible only (Sola Scriptura) faith, and the horrific persecutions they endured, from ancient times to the early 1900's.

"They often travelled on horseback in different countries as hawkers, and, thanks to their bales of goods, obtained access to the rich and poor. ... While the merchant was doing business, he would observe the character of his customers, and when, at the end, they asked if he had anything else to sell, he would reply, 'Certainly, I have treasures much more precious than those which you have seen. ... a jewel which shines with such brightness, that it enables one to see, and to come to the knowledge of God.' ... The merchant then drew out of his pocket, or from a secret drawer of his travelling chest, a Gospel, and commenced to read." ... In this way the Vaudois found a means of spreading the Word of God more and more. ... What wonderful results might this seed-time have produced, if the storm of persecution had not broken out, reducing almost to naught the people of God. - Henry Fliedner

The Mute Christian under the Smarting Rod by Thomas Brooks

Thomas Brooks first published this work in 1659 as the expression of his own experience under trials and afflictions and as an encouragement and an admonition to others. Here afflictions, trials, temptations, and human weakness are set in the balance against Scriptural knowledge in an exhortation to faith and the humble acceptance and profiting of the children of God under the disciplining hand of a God who would be known as our Father:

“Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” Hebrews 12:9-11.

And as recorded in the Psalms,

“My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven. If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; if they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.” Psalms 89:28-34.

The Marriage Ring

The Marriage Ring or How to Make Home Happy by John Angell James with a sermon on marriage by John Owen

"As the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it." - Ephesians 5:24-25

An exhortation on Christian Marriage and its Duties.

The secret of happiness lies folded up in the leaves of the Bible and is carried in the heart of true religion. A good Christian cannot be a bad husband or father and, as this is equally true in everything, he who has the most piety will shine the most in all the relationships of life.

A Bible placed between man and wife as the basis of their union, the rule of their conduct, and the model of their spirit will make up for many differences between them, comfort them under many crosses, guide them through many straits, support them in their last sad parting from one another and reunite them in that happy world where they shall remain forever. Let the two parties in wedded life be believers in Christ Jesus and partake themselves of the peace that surpasses understanding. And if happiness is to be found on earth, it will be enjoyed within the hallowed circle of a family thus united by love and sanctified by grace.
